October 18, 2006 Update

Byline -- Webmaster, Our Universe, October 18, 2006 (revised October 22)

If you're completely new to the site feel free to check out our somewhat dated Welcome Section below and then return here for the latest and more recent updates.  Also check out the Smallville Twist music video via the YouTube links in the borders of this site.

YouTube Purge

There's been another YouTube purge at Warner Bros. request, as described in the October 18 update of the YouTube and Copyright Page.  Parts 1 and 2 are still up, along with the original Smallville Twist music video and the season 6 Promo.

Smallville's Ratings Woes

As of this writing, three episodes of Smallville season 6 have aired and the ratings news is bad.  Average viewership has declined 18.7% and more than one million viewers.  See the Ratings Analysis Page at picontinuum.org for more, including two charts at the bottom of that page.

That ratings page also has some analysis and recommendations on what Smallville should do now to turn things around.  We highly recommend it for Powers That Be types!  Maybe even heed it this time!  It's no fun watching the show go down the tubes, and it's not like we can bring in Hiro from Heroes to make a face, go back and save the day. :-)  It's up to you Powers That Be guys and gals to make it happen!

The Future of This Site

Apologies for the long delays in updating the page, but it's really been a reflection of what the Smallville Powers That Be chose to serve up, and even more so promote, for season 6.  Support for Chlark and the Smallville Twist on the story is and remains significant and indeed the key to the turnaround of the show.  However, until they see that and also start to communicate it there's really not much more to say.

The Powers That Be seem to have another window here to save the show, as described on that Ratings Analysis Page, but there's still very little indication they'll take it.  Devoted to Smallville and AMO both cite an ew.com piece in the last 24 hours that mentioned Chlois and favored it.  The comments to that blog are endless and mostly supportive, and online Chlark/Chloe supporters continue to be out in full force elsewhere.  Perhaps the ratings failure of the season 6 strategy will also be a catalyst for change and the recognition it's urgently needed.  But until it happens or there are developments that point to that, updates to this site will probably continue to be sporadic.  Eventually the entire site may be folded back into another one, an Internet Time Capsule of sorts as we've called it, to a great opportunity lost.  In the meantime let's hope for the best!

The Smallville Twist Files

This is the episode-like treatment of the Smallville Twist that we've just uploaded to YouTube.  It's less than 45 minutes, split into 15 parts averaging just under three minutes each (excluding the URL to this site at the end of each segment).

The Smallville Twist section of our site has more detail and the YouTube links.  [Note: the links are also now in the left and right border areas, highlighted in the 2nd and 3rd boxes.]

New Smallville Season 6 Promo on the CW

Click here or on the links in the border areas to take a look at the first promo from The CW that features new Smallville Season 6 footage.  It's about 30 seconds long, has been very well received, and Chloe and Chlark are front and center towards the end of it.  That's a YouTube link as are the other video ones on this site.

bullet

Some Other Chlark Videos

YouTube users have also uploaded other Chlark clips or videos over the last few months that we've only recently discovered.  We haven't looked at all of them (some can be sappy -- different strokes!) but here are a few we think are quite good especially for anyone new to the show or who may have only seen a bit of it.

The Chlark Elevator Scene From Episode 4-09 (54s)

That Face-Chlark (2m 21s)

The Chlark Jersey Scene From Episode 4-04 (1m 24s)

We think the second one, That Face-Chlark, is better than The Smallville Twist and the other two are good introductions to Chlark.  Anyone new to Smallville might want to take a look at the Smallville Season 6 Promo first, then the above and then The Smallville Twist.

Zodana Blog

We launched this on August 16 and there are three blogs up so far.  The Index is Here.  The shtick is that the blogmaster, Zodana, is a character merger of (i) Zod, possessed by Lex, and (ii) Lana.  They got zapped on the rooftop there at the end of 5-22 "Vessel", by a Jor-El lightning bolt.  They (yes, they refer to themselves in the plural) are evil dominant -- well, not too evil but they do root for the Cylons in BSG!  I guess that makes them pretty evil.

Zodana won't always be writing the blogs but they might comment on them.  Their section is where we'll channel all the critical stuff that's been floating around Smallville cyberspace lately, while trying to keep the focus positive on the rest of the site.  So if you have a rant on Smallville -- hopefully good humor fodder -- click here to e-mail the bad hybrid Zodana.  (Don't forget to fill out the subject line or it might get lost as spam.)

Welcome to SMALLVILLE-TWIST.ORG

Byline -- Webmaster, Our Universe, August 4, 2006

If you've found your way to this web site, chances are good you either (i) already watch the Smallville TV series; or (ii) recently heard about or saw the Smallville Twist Music Video described in the next section.  If you don't fall into either category it's okay.  There's a start-from-scratch element to other material on the site that you can read later.  For now, we suggest you start here on this page.

The Smallville Twist

The Smallville Twist is a non-profit song and video produced by your webmaster. It's in the nature of commentary and possibly other fair use exemptions, but attempts have been or will be made to obtain permission from the four sources of copyright material that were used.  If the song and video generate publicity for the show, or if Warner Bros. Television or The CW (which produces and airs Smallville respectively) otherwise decide to make use of it, we'd suggest any proceeds go to charity.  For example, if it got radio or video play any normal fees could be paid to Christopher Reeve's foundation.

The Smallville Twist music video has been tested on several existing and lapsed Smallville viewers, as well as those who have rarely if ever seen the show.  We believe it's effective in conveying the nature of the twist, advocating that the show follow through with it, and generating interest in and discussion of it among those who don't regularly watch the show.  After viewing it we welcome your comments via email to your Webmaster or via the Sign On! page on this site.  The Smallville Twist can currently be found on YouTube using the link in the left border or just click here.

The Twist Described

The Chlois File describes the twist and the case for it in significant detail, but another way of looking at it is that it consists of three main parts: (i) The Professional Case; (ii) The Romance Case; and (iii) The Name Issue.  The Professional Case is really the most obvious and least controversial.  Chloe Sullivan is the only Daily Planet reporter character in Smallville.  She's only 19 or 20, and she's already had a front page byline there.  This is consistent with the premise of Smallville, where everything is condensed and/or happens earlier.  Lex is there, Metropolis is just over yonder, and the Fortress and Brainiac and  Zod show up before Clark leaves his teens.  Chloe Sullivan being a new twist version of Lois Lane would just be another extension of that.

The second part, The Romance Case, is somewhat more contentious but the vast majority of Smallville viewers have at least some affinity for Clark-Chloe or "Chlark".  In fact 70%+ rate it 7/10 or higher and over 50% rate it 9/10 or 10/10, i.e. are clamoring for it.  The left border of this site has a link to a FAQ-style page on the carefully conducted survey that revealed this.

The third element of the twist is The Name Issue, and it's by far the most misunderstood and controversial.  People think that the twist requires some sort of permanent name change for Chloe.  It doesn't, but in fact she's already handed in a story (in season 3) using the pseudonym Lois Lane.  If Smallville follows through with the twist, the Lois Lane character, Chloe's cousin who was introduced in season 4, would have a different destiny and Chloe might or might not adopt the pen name again.

You may also want to take a look at the Chloisers Speak! page to get an idea of the widespread popularity of the twist online.  Offline, the terms "Chlois" and "Chloiser" are unknown, but almost any viewer will have some sense that Chloe Sullivan is very Lois-like.  In fact so much so that if she isn't Smallville's version of the Lois Lane character, then she'll effectively become the Ultimate Contrivance rather than the Ultimate Romance Destiny of Clark Kent aka Superman.
